Zumbimba TX – Nov 7, 2026
Come together to celebrate the impact of culture on community, as an act of self-love, as a step toward better understandings of our diverse neighbors, and as a step toward recognizing that we thrive not in isolation and exceptionalism, but in community, through sharing, humility, and joy. Every step we take to better understand those around us is a fight against the individualized blinders of capitalism and colonialism, and is a step toward true liberation for all.
For over 30 years, Filhos de Bimba Escola de Capoeira has recognized the importance of Black contributions to Black liberation in Brazil, as well as to Brazilian culture as a whole, through a festival called Zumbimba, celebrating two great figures (Zumbi dos Palmares & Mestre Bimba) in the history of liberation and cultural preservation in Brazil. This event is usually held in November, as the official Day of Black Consciousness in Brasil is Nov 20 (first officially recognized in 2011), and November is informally known as Novembro Negro. Nucleos, or branches, of our capoeira school around the globe all celebrate this festival, and our Texas branch joined in the tradition in 2014.
